Running Together: Mental Health, Community, and the Power of Movement in Ukraine
In Ukraine, where communities continue to face the stress and uncertainty of life during wartime, taking care of our mental health has never been more important. Moments of connection, movement, and joy—however small—can have a big impact.
At Runday, we’ve seen how a simple weekly 5K can do more than improve physical health. It creates a rhythm—a reason to show up and enjoy a moment of peace, laughter, and shared purpose. And for many across Ukraine, it has become a form of mental health support—accessible, community-driven, and full of hope.
Running as a Tool for Mental Health
Science consistently shows that regular exercise can alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety. Just 30 minutes of physical activity can release endorphins, lower stress hormones, and improve mood. But during war or crisis, the benefits run deeper. Running offers a sense of control and accomplishment when much feels out of our hands. It brings clarity and calm to a racing mind.
In cities like Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, and Kremenchuk, where daily life often includes air raid sirens and disrupted routines, Runday offers a slice of normalcy and a safe, welcoming community to move forward together—one foot in front of the other.
Rebuilding Connection Through Community
In stressful times, feeling disconnected can take a real toll. Runday offers a powerful antidote: a space where people come together with purpose. Whether you're chasing a new personal best or just walking the route with a friend, you’re part of something bigger. Volunteers keep things ticking with good humour and high-fives, making sure everyone feels welcome. Strangers cheer you on. Shared struggles quietly turn into shared strength.
For displaced people, returning residents, and new neighbours from other cities or countries, Runday also acts as a connection point—a chance to meet new faces, discover local parks, and feel rooted in your community.
Not Just About Medals—Resilience Through Movement
Resilience isn’t always loud or dramatic. Sometimes it looks like showing up for a run on a cold Saturday morning. Or offering to volunteer even when your own energy is low. These small acts of care—for yourself and others—build collective strength over time.
In today’s Ukraine, getting moving isn’t about medals—it’s a form of healing. Runday is proud to play a small part in that recovery, offering open, welcoming events where everyone’s pace is the right pace.

“For me, Runday is a community of like-minded people and a support group. I’m a beginner runner, and I needed support to not give up. It’s here — at Runday — that I found it.”
